## Overview

Managed Experience Builder for ArcGIS allows you to assign a custom domain name to your Experience Builder applications.

Instead of using the default Cartinuum-generated application URL, you can configure a domain that belongs to your organisation, such as:

- `gis.yourorganisation.com`
- `maps.yourorganisation.com`
- `experience.yourorganisation.com`

Custom domains improve branding, simplify sharing, and provide a more professional experience for end users.

---

## Before You Begin

Before configuring a custom domain, ensure that:

- You have access to the Managed Experience Builder management console.
- You have permission to manage DNS records for your organisation's domain (or you are able to arrange for your IT team to add DNS records).
- The domain or subdomain you intend to use is not already in use by another service. The chosen domain will be used only for your deployed Managed Experience Builder apps.

#### Recommended Approach

We recommend using a dedicated subdomain rather than your root domain.

Examples:

✅ `gis.company.com`

✅ `maps.company.com`

✅ `experience.company.com`

⚠️ `company.com`

*The screenshots in this help article show the administrator configuring a custom domain called *`experience.cartinuum.app`*. This is for demonstration purposes only. You should use your own domain name.*

---

### Step 1 – Enable Custom Domains

1. From the Managed Experience Builder for ArcGIS management console in Your Extensions, click the arrow to open the Custom Domain section.

2. Enter the custom domain name you want to use.
3. Click **Enable Custom Domain**.

Example:

```
experience.company.com
```

Once enabled, two DNS records will be generated.

---

### Step 2 – Configure DNS Verification

The first DNS record is a TXT record used to verify ownership of the domain.

### Example

| Type | Name | Value |
| --- | --- | --- |
| TXT | _verify.experience.company.com | cartinuum-extensions-verification=xxxxx |

1. Copy the TXT record from the management console.
2. Open your DNS provider.
3. Create a new TXT record.
4. Save the changes.

---

### Step 3 – Configure DNS Routing

The second DNS record is a CNAME record used to route traffic to Managed Experience Builder.

### Example

| Type | Name | Value |
| --- | --- | --- |
| CNAME | [experience.company.com](http://experience.company.com) | [xxxxxxxxx.cloudfront.net](http://xxxxxxxxx.cloudfront.net) |

1. Copy the CNAME record from the management console.
2. Create a new CNAME record in your DNS provider.
3. Save the changes.

---

### Step 4 – Wait for DNS Propagation

DNS updates can take several minutes to several hours depending on your DNS provider.

During this period the domain status will display:

**Waiting for DNS Verification**

No further action is required.

---

### Step 5 – Verify Domain Status

Return to the management console and click: **Refresh Status**

The platform will check whether the DNS records are visible.

Once verification succeeds, the status will change to:

**Activating**

![image-20260602-000652.png](media://c77e9437-4ef2-465e-b796-b691fcbf0855)

---

### Step 6 – Wait for Activation

After verification, Managed Experience Builder will:

- Provision SSL certificates
- Configure routing
- Activate the domain

This process usually completes within a few minutes.

When complete, the status will display:

**Active**

---

### Step 7 – Test Your Domain

Navigate to your list of deployed Experience Builder applications.

![image-20260602-001126.png](media://c66d6af3-f33b-482f-bd0b-dca3d7d2cc85)

Click the Open app option. Your app should now open using your new custom domain.

Example:

```
https://experience.company.com/0/index.html
```

## Troubleshooting

### Status Remains "Waiting for DNS Verification"

#### Possible Causes

- TXT or CNAME records have not propagated yet
- TXT or CNAME record values were entered incorrectly
- TXT or CNAME records were created under the wrong host name

#### Checks

Verify:

- The TXT/CNAME records exactly match the value shown in the management console.
- The host name exactly matches the value shown in the management console.
- The record is publicly visible using DNS lookup tools.

---

### Status Remains "Activating"

Activation requires SSL certificate provisioning and infrastructure updates.

This can take several minutes after verification completes.

#### Recommended Action

- Wait 10–15 minutes.
- Click **Refresh Status**.
- If activation does not complete after 30 minutes, contact Cartinuum Support.

---

### Domain Opens But Displays Security Warnings

This usually indicates SSL provisioning has not completed.

#### Recommended Action

- Wait for the status to become **Active**.
- Refresh your browser.
- Retry after several minutes.

---

### Domain Cannot Be Reached

#### Possible Causes

- Missing CNAME record
- Incorrect CNAME value
- DNS propagation still in progress

#### Checks

Verify that:

- The CNAME record exactly matches the value provided in the management console.
- No conflicting DNS records exist for the same hostname.
- DNS propagation has completed.

---
