[The Screening widget](https://extensions.cartinuum.com/product/screening/) helps users define an area of interest, analyse configured map layers, and generate report outputs from the features that intersect the area.

Use this widget when users need to understand what features may be affected by a proposed activity, incident, location, or study area.

## What this widget does

Screening lets users create an area of interest using configured tools such as place name search, drawing, shapefile upload, or coordinates. The widget analyses selected layers against that area and can present or download the results.

The widget is best described as a general spatial impact screening tool. It can support environmental and planning workflows, but it is also useful for emergency, operational, infrastructure, and property-impact review.

## When to use it

Use Screening when users need to:

- Define an area of interest.
- Analyse which configured layers intersect that area.
- Summarise impacted features.
- Group or sort results.
- Generate printable or downloadable reports.
- Support planning, environmental, emergency, or operational review workflows.

## Key features

- Area of interest tools for place name, drawing, shapefile, and coordinates.
- Configurable drawing tools.
- Traverse-style coordinate and distance entry, if coordinates are enabled.
- Selectable analysis layers.
- Configurable area and length units.
- Configurable maximum features to analyse.
- Configurable report settings.
- CSV downloads for analysis results.
- Printable browser-based reports with map image and result tables.
- Results grouped by configured fields.
- Result statistics such as feature count, total area, and total length.
- Symbology controls for area and buffer graphics.
- English, French, and Spanish translations.

## Requirements

- [ArcGIS Experience Builder 1.14 or later.](https://developers.arcgis.com/experience-builder/guide/release-versions/)
- A Map widget in the Experience Builder app.
- Queryable feature layers for analysis.
- A valid Cartinuum widget license.

For shapefile Area of Interest input, users upload a zipped shapefile. The upload uses the portal `/sharing/rest/content/features/generate` operation, so availability and file-size limits depend on the user's ArcGIS portal and its hosting/feature-service configuration.

## Before you begin

Before configuring Screening:

1. Add a Map widget to your Experience Builder app.
2. Decide which map layers should be included in analysis.
3. Confirm that those layers support query operations.
4. Confirm that layer pop-ups or fields are configured so analysis fields can be selected.
5. Decide which area-of-interest tools should be available.
6. Decide which fields should appear in reports.
7. Install or enable the widget using the standard widget installation process.

For installation and licensing steps, see [Widget Installation](https://help.cartinuum.com/space/WC/4255481886/Widget+Installation).

## Add Screening to an app

1. Open your app in ArcGIS Experience Builder.
2. Add the Screening widget to the page.
3. Open the widget settings.
4. Add the widget license.
5. Select the Map widget.
6. Configure Area of Interest tools.
7. Configure Analysis Layers.
8. Configure report and download settings.
9. Save and publish the Experience Builder app.

## Configure the widget

### Area of Interest tools

Choose the tools users can use to create an area of interest.

Available options include:

- Place Name
- Draw
- Shapefile
- Coordinates

By default, Place Name and Draw are enabled. Shapefile and Coordinates can be enabled in the widget settings.

The Shapefile option lets users upload a zipped shapefile to define the Area of Interest. The Coordinates option supports traverse-style workflows where a user defines an area from a starting coordinate plus bearing and distance values.

### Drawing tools

Choose which drawing tools are available:

- Point
- Polyline
- Extent
- Polygon
- Circle

### Analysis layers

Choose the layers and fields to include in analysis and reports. Only layers with query capability should be used.

For each layer, configure:

- Display label.
- Fields shown in analysis and reports.
- Optional grouping field.
- Sort settings.
- Statistics such as count, total length, or total area.

In the current Experience Builder implementation, analysis layers are selected from feature layers in the connected map. Layers should support query operations because the widget queries them by spatial intersection with the Area of Interest.

### Analysis settings

| Setting | What it controls |
| --- | --- |
| Allow shapefile upload | Setting exposed for report-time shapefile upload. |
| Only analyse visible layers | Setting exposed in the builder. |
| Area units | Units used for area calculations. |
| Length units | Units used for length calculations. |
| Maximum features to analyse | Limit used to protect performance. |
| Search tolerance | Setting exposed in the builder. |

The current analysis code uses the configured maximum feature count when querying results. If more features intersect the Area of Interest, the widget analyses up to the configured limit and indicates that the maximum record count was exceeded.

### Download settings

Configure how users can download or print analysis results.

Current runtime outputs include:

- CSV downloads, generated per result layer.
- Printable reports, generated in the browser with a map image, summary table, and layer result tables.

The settings panel also exposes download modes for Feature layers and Extract Data Task, and types include File Geodatabase and Shapefile in the shared type definitions. The current runtime download handler generates CSV files.

## Use the widget

1. Open the Experience Builder app.
2. Open Screening.
3. Define an area of interest using one of the configured tools.
4. Apply a buffer if required.
5. Run the report or analysis.
6. Review impacted features by layer.
7. Expand layer results to inspect details.
8. Refresh the report if needed.
9. Download CSV results or print the report if enabled.

## Troubleshooting

### A layer cannot be added for analysis

Check that the layer supports query operations and is not a nested layer type unsupported by the widget.

### No features are found

Check that:

- The area of interest intersects the configured layer.
- The layer is included in the analysis.
- The maximum feature count has not been reached.

### Shapefile upload is not available

Check that:

- The Shapefile Area of Interest tool is enabled in the widget settings.
- The shapefile is provided as a `.zip` file.
- The user is signed in.
- The ArcGIS portal supports the `/sharing/rest/content/features/generate` operation.
- The portal hosting or feature services required for shapefile generation are available.

### Reports do not include expected fields

Open the layer field settings and confirm that the required fields are visible and included.

If fields are populated from map configuration, check that pop-ups are enabled for the layer in the web map.
